Shipment Dimensions & Weights Explanation

The Shipment Dimensions & Weight section in Cario is used to define the physical characteristics of your freight.

This information is critical for carrier pricing, service availability, space planning, and invoice accuracy

What This Section Is Used For

Shipment dimensions and weight are used by Cario to:

  • Calculate cubic volume (m³)
  • Determine chargeable weight
  • Validate carrier rules and service eligibility
  • Prevent incorrect pricing and post-delivery adjustments

Accurate entry ensures the freight is priced and handled correctly from booking through to delivery.

Field Explanation

Each row in the grid represents a shipment item or container.

  • Product
Predefined shipment profiles for commonly sent items. Using products speeds up consignment creation by auto-filling dimensions and weight.
  • Container
The type of freight being shipped (e.g. pallet, carton, satchel).
  • Reference
Optional reference specific to the shipment line. Can be auto-filled from consignment references but may be overridden.
  • Quantity
Number of containers of the same type.
  • Weight (kg)
Weight per container, entered in kilograms.
  • Length / Width / Height (cm)
Physical dimensions per container, entered in centimetres.
  • Volume (m³)
Automatically calculated once dimensions are entered.
  • Fragile / Liquid / Perishable
Indicators used for handling and carrier requirements.
  • Haz Mat
Used when shipping Dangerous Goods (requires DG setup first).
  • Assets
    Reserved for future use.
  • Trash icon
    Removes the shipment line.

Why Accurate Dimensions & Weight Matter

Entering correct dimensions and weight helps:

  • Ensure correct freight pricing
  • Prevent carrier rejections or delays
  • Avoid unexpected invoice adjustments
  • Ensure accurate cubic and pallet calculations

Incorrect data is one of the most common causes of freight disputes and billing discrepancies

How to Enter Shipment Dimensions & Weight (Step-by-Step)

  1. In the Shipment Dimensions & Weight section, select a Container type
  2. Enter the Quantity
  3. Enter the Weight (kg) per container
  4. Enter Length, Width, and Height in centimetres
  5. Review the automatically calculated Volume (m³)
  6. Confirm the background turns white and action buttons become active

Tip: Use the Tab key to move between fields quickly.

If a Product is selected, the system may auto-fill dimensions, weight, and DG information. These values can still be adjusted if required.

Validation & Warning Behaviour

Cario actively validates entered values to prevent errors:

  • Grey background
Indicates mandatory fields are incomplete and actions are disabled.
  • Red volume field
Appears when calculated volume is below the minimum threshold (e.g. less than 0.01 m³). The consignment cannot proceed until corrected.
  • Yellow dimension warning
Appears when values seem unusually large (e.g. millimetres entered instead of centimetres).
The system allows progression but warns of potential high charges.
  • Automatic row creation
Once all mandatory fields are valid, a new empty row is added automatically for the next item.

These validations help catch errors early and protect pricing accuracy.

Updating Shipment Lines

If dimensions or weight need to be adjusted:

  • Click directly into the relevant field
  • Update the value
  • The system recalculates volume and totals automatically

Totals for items, weight, volume, and pallet spaces are updated in real time.
