Cario Glossary of Terms

The freight industry uses a wide range of specialised terms, many of which appear in Cario tracking events, rate cards, and reporting. This glossary explains common freight, logistics, billing, and system terms used within Cario. 

Freight & Transport Equipment 

Vehicles & Trailers 

  • B-Double – Articulated heavy vehicle with two trailers. 
  • Semi / Semi-Trailer – Truck with a single trailer. 
  • Rigid – Truck with non-removable sides; loaded from the rear. 
  • Dog – Trailer with axles at the front and rear. 
  • Pig – Trailer with a single axle or axle group near the middle. 

Load Types 

  • Full Load – Freight occupying most or all of a vehicle. 
  • Loose Load – Freight not palletised. 
  • Oversize – Freight outside standard size limits. 
  • Neat Freight – Uniform, stackable, pallet-friendly freight. 
  • Ugly Freight – Irregular, oversized, or hard-to-stack freight. 

Containers, Units & Packaging 

Transport Units 

  • Transport Unit – The package being shipped (carton, pallet, container). 
  • Packed Item – Product packed and ready for shipment. 
  • Kit – Multiple products grouped as one order item. 

Containers & Pallets 

  • Full Container Load (FCL) – One consignment fills a container. 
  • Less than a Container Load (LCL) – Multiple consignments share a container. 
  • Pallet – Standard freight platform. 
  • Skid – Smaller than a pallet; used for heavy or awkward items. 
  • Pallet Space – Area occupied on a truck. 
  • Pallet Space Charge – Charge based on pallet space used. 

Addresses, Locations & Facilities 

  • Pickup Address – Where freight is collected. 
  • Delivery Address – Where freight is delivered. 
  • Residential – Delivery to a home (often incurs a fee). 
  • Remote Area – Location outside standard delivery zones. 
  • Depot – Facility for sorting freight. 
  • Warehouse – Bulk storage location. 
  • Distribution Centre (DC) – Central facility supplying retail stores. 
  • Lane – Defined route from pickup to delivery address. 
  • Lane Rates – Pricing for a specific lane. 
  • Mail Only – Areas serviced only by postal carriers. 

Consignments, Orders & Documents 

Orders 

  • Order – Request to ship one or more items. 
  • Order Created – Order has been raised. 
  • Order Item – Individual product in an order. 
  • Purchase Order (PO) – Formal request for supply. 
  • Purchase Order No – Identifier for a PO. 

Consignments 

  • Consignment – Shipment created from an order. 
  • Consignment Created – Order converted into a shipment. 
  • Consignment Number / Connote – Unique shipment identifier. 
  • Consignment Note – Paper or electronic shipment document. 
  • Manifest – Grouped list showing consignments handled together. 
  • Runsheet – Driver pickup or delivery list. 

Delivery Status, Events & Exceptions 

Delivery Events 

  • Dispatch – Freight prepared for pickup. 
  • In Transit – Freight moving through the network. 
  • On Board for Delivery (OBFD) – Loaded on delivery vehicle. 
  • Delivered (DEL) – Delivery completed. 
  • Proof of Pickup (POP) – Pickup confirmation. 
  • Proof of Delivery (POD) – Delivery confirmation. 
  • Sign on Glass (SOG) – Digital signature captured on device. 

Exceptions & Failures 

  • Authority to Leave (ATL) – Permission to leave freight unattended. 
  • Card Left (CL) – Delivery attempted, no ATL. 
  • Check Address (CA) – Address requires correction. 
  • Exception – Irregular delivery event. 
  • Futile – Failed pickup or delivery attempt. 
  • Futile Fee – Fee charged for a futile attempt. 
  • Return To Sender (RTS) – Freight returned to sender. 
  • Redirect – Delivery address changed mid-journey. 
  • Time Slot – Scheduled delivery window. 

Weight, Dimensions & Load Calculations 

  • Weight (Dead Weight) – Actual weight on a scale. 
  • Dims – Length × Width × Height. 
  • Cubic Weight – Volume-based weight calculation. 
  • Charge Weight – Greater of dead or cubic weight. 
  • Check Weight Cubed (CWC) – Carrier-adjusted dimensions via scanning. 

Pricing, Charges & Rates 

Base Charges 

  • Freight Charge – Core cost of moving freight. 
  • Basic Charge – Fixed starting fee. 
  • Minimum Charge – Lowest possible charge regardless of calculation. 

Rate Types 

  • Rates – Values used to calculate charges. 
  • Lane Rates – Rates for a specific route. 
  • Margin Rates – Cost plus markup. 
  • Tier Charge – Pricing by weight/volume brackets. 
  • Item-Based Charge – Charged per item or carton. 
  • Kilo Charge – Charged per kilogram. 
  • Distance Charge – Charged per kilometre. 
  • Time Charge – Charged by time spent. 
  • Pallet Space Charge – Charged by space used. 

Other Costs 

  • Fee – Additional charge. 
  • Demurrage – Waiting time charge. 
  • Oversize Fee – Charge for oversized freight. 

Invoicing, Tax & Reconciliation 

  • Invoice – Request for payment. 
  • Carrier Invoice – Invoice from the carrier. 
  • Customer Invoice – Invoice issued to the customer. 
  • Cost – Amount paid to provide a service. 
  • Charge – Amount billed for a service. 
  • Reconciliation – Comparing estimated vs actual charges. 
  • Variance – Difference between two values. 
  • Payment Terms – Timeframe for invoice payment. 

Tax 

  • GST (Goods and Services Tax) 
  • VAT (Value Added Tax) 
  • TAX – Generic tax reference. 

Risk, Insurance & Compliance 

  • Dangerous Goods (DG) / HazMat – Hazardous freight. 
  • Goods Type – Classification of shipped goods. 
  • Transit Warranty – Insurance against loss or damage. 
  • Insured Value – Declared value covered by warranty. 

Systems, Data & Integrations 

  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) – Data exchange between systems. 
  • Import – Load data into Cario. 
  • Export – Extract data from Cario. 
  • Event – Recorded system milestone. 
  • Journey – All legs from pickup to delivery. 
  • Leg – Single segment of a journey. 
  • Soft Delete – Record hidden but recoverable. 
  • Ticket – Customer issue or query. 
  • Ticket Number – Unique ticket ID. 
  • Customer Resource Management (CRM) – Customer and ticket system. 
  • Freshdesk (FD) – CRM platform. 
  • Freight Aggregator – Multi-carrier booking platform.
