Understanding Rule Sets in Cario
Overview
Rule Sets in Cario allow you to control which carrier services appear in Quick Quote or during consignment creation based on certain conditions. They provide an easy way to guide users toward the correct service options by applying simple logic such as container type, location, or weight ranges.
This article provides a high-level understanding of what Rule Sets do and how they affect quoting.
What Rule Sets Are Used For
Rule Sets help determine which carrier services should be shown when a quote is calculated. They can be used to:
- Prioritise or filter specific carrier services
- Apply business rules (e.g., only show a service if the container type matches)
- Simplify user selection during quoting
- Ensure the correct carriers appear for certain shipment types
Customers do not need to configure Rule Sets themselves — these are created by the Cario Onboarding or Support Teams based on your operational requirements.
How Rule Sets Work
Each Rule Set contains conditions that the system checks when you run a quote. Examples of conditions include:
- Container Type (e.g., Carton, Pallet, Crate)
- Postcode ranges
- Weight or cubic thresholds
- Customer account settings
When a rule is triggered, Cario returns only the services associated with that rule.
If no rules apply, the system returns all valid carrier services for the selected lane.
Rule Evaluation Flow
When a quote is submitted:
- Cario checks the active Rule Set assigned to your customer.
- The system evaluates each condition in order.
- When a condition is met, Cario returns the service(s) linked to that rule.
- If none of the conditions match, Cario shows all available services with valid rates.
This helps ensure users only see the services that fit the shipment criteria.
Applying Rule Sets to a Customer
Rule Sets are assigned at the customer or site level. The onboarding team will:
- Create the Rule Set based on your requirements
- Apply it to the correct customer or branch
- Test the behaviour in Quick Quote
- Ensure that the expected carriers and services are displayed
Once applied, the Rule Set automatically guides the quoting experience.
Common Ways Rule Sets Are Used
Rule Sets can support a wide range of operational needs, such as:
- Showing a specific carrier when shipping a particular container type
- Filtering out services not relevant to certain locations
- Ensuring only approved services appear for certain product types
- Preventing incorrect services from being selected accidentally
If you need a rule created or updated, simply inform Cario Support or your onboarding specialist.
Examples of Rule Set Outcomes
Based on the attached SOP examples:
- If the container type matches a configured rule (e.g., Carton), Cario returns the specific carrier service tied to that rule.
- If the container type is not part of the rule (e.g., Panel), the system falls back and shows all valid services available for the lane.
Summary
Rule Sets help ensure your team selects the right carrier services every time by applying simple rules during quoting. They support efficiency, accuracy, and better alignment to your operational requirements.
All configuration is handled by the Cario Onboarding and Support Teams — customers only need to outline the scenarios or rules they want applied.
