Fee Rates Overview
Purpose
This article provides a simple overview of how additional charges and surcharges (Fee Rates) work in the Cario Freight Management System. These fees ensure accurate quoting and billing based on the carrier’s requirements.
What Are Fee Rates?
Fee Rates are extra charges that carriers apply in addition to standard transport rates. These may include:
- Fuel surcharges
- Manual handling fees
- Oversize/overlength fees
- Region-based surcharges
- Carrier-specific fees
Most surcharges come directly from the carrier’s rate card file. The Cario Onboarding and Support teams load and manage these fees for you.
Before Fee Rates Can Be Applied
To ensure surcharges calculate correctly:
- Your carrier rate card must be loaded into Cario
- The rate card must be assigned to your customer account
- The surcharge details must be supplied by the carrier or included in the rate card
You don’t need to configure these manually — the Cario team handles it.
How Fee Rates Are Added
Once the rate card is assigned, the Cario team will:
- Load the surcharge information into the Fee Rates section
- Match each fee to the correct fee code or description
- Apply fees to the correct rate card (if multiple rate cards exist)

Cario supports two main fee types:
- Per Consignment Fees (charged per shipment)
- Per Pallet Fees (charged per pallet)
System-Managed vs Manual Fees
Some carriers automatically update certain fees (such as fuel surcharges). These appear as system-managed and update globally.
Other surcharges require manual setup, especially when they apply only to certain services. The Cario team ensures these are linked correctly to your rate card.
If a surcharge needs to be changed or set to $0, the Support team can update it for you.
Price on Application (POA)
Some charges cannot be automatically calculated. If the carrier lists a surcharge as POA, the Cario team will apply the POA option for that fee.
This is typically used for oversize freight or special-handling scenarios.
Regional Surcharges
If a surcharge applies only to a specific region or postcode range, Cario will configure this based on the carrier’s instructions.
If a new regional fee type is required, Support can create it.
Testing Fee Rates
After Fee Rates are applied, the Cario team tests them using Quick Quote to confirm:
- The fees are appearing correctly
- The values match the carrier’s surcharge file
- The total freight cost calculates accurately
Conclusion
Fee Rates help ensure that all carrier charges are applied accurately in Cario. While the configuration and updates are handled by the Cario Onboarding and Support teams, customers only need to provide the surcharge file or carrier information when updates are required.
